The expression originates from a party at the court of Edward III. At a court ball the King's cousin Joan of Kent dropped her garter while dancing and was mocked by the people at the ball. In an act of chivalry the King said "Shame on him who thinks ill of her", since then this phrase has been added to the coat of arms of the United Kingdom.
